Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is on the north side of Maui. It is a scenic drive along the coast. Hana is a small town located at the northeast tip of Maui. You must take the road to get there. It's a beautiful drive, with amazing stops along the way. After church on July 19th, and a late breakfast, we headed out on our journey around 1pm(learned later this was way to late to start out). We took our Motion Sickness pills, and got on the road. There are many places to stop and see sights along the drive. We didn't stop at all of them, but enjoyed a few. We began our drive from Kahului.


The road: What are we getting ourselves into???

First stop-Twin Falls

Check out Jer diving off the cliff!! Just kidding, that's not Jer. He wanted to jump off, but the line to jump was long. He figured he'd do it at the next waterfall stop.

No jumping for off the cliff for Jer. He didn't feel safe not having someone else to see diving into the water and being OK. I'm glad he didn't jump, would have freaked me out.

Black Cat sitting by the rest stop across from waterfall. Was really hoping it wasn't a sign of bad luck! Beautiful cat, but it kind of gave me the creeps the way it stared at me. I'm not the biggest cat lover out there.


We made it to HANA!!!


Thank goodness we made it to Hana considering we didn't have enough gas to get back! Guess Jer missed the signs saying fill up before you start the drive. Luckily there is 1 gas station in Hana. Unlucky is the fact it costs so much more to fill the. In main Kahului it was $3.56, and $in Hana $4.25!! The curse of that black cat!! HA!

My father-in-law found 7 heart shaped lava rocks here. They are amazing!! Only later did we learn it was bad luck to take the lava rocks. Opps!! They are awesome though. I have one on my dresser now at home. Jer also collected the beautiful black sand in a water bottle.




There was still more to see, but by this time is was almost 8:00pm so we decided to quit and head back. The map said the continuing road was closed due to an earthquake in 07, so we went back the way we came.
We did stop at the most delicious Fruit stand outside Hana, and got the most delicious bread ever!! A Banana Bread(my fav) and a pineapple bread! The Road to Hana is not a fun road to drive at night. A few of us had upset stomachs, and we were so tired. We didn't get back to the resort until after 10pm.

The next week while in Oahu we found out the road after Hana(the town) actually was open. Would have been a much faster way to the resort instead of having to back track. Plus had we known it was open we would have started off on that end. We missed seeing the famous seven pools, the Red Sand Beach, and more amazing waterfalls. Guess that means we will have to be back in Maui someday!:)

It was a wonderful day, filled with amazing memories. The girls did great on the drive. Kenzie now has a shirt saying "I Survived the Road to Hana"!!! Seriously, survived it a great word for it. Around every curve I thought we'd either crash head on or go off a cliff. The roads are so narrow, and so many blind spots. Thanks to Jer for being a safe & wonderful driver.
